Congratulations, Alexa, on Your Science Fair Success

Alexa Lugod next to her Westside Impact Regional Science and Engineering Fair project

Alexa Lugod, a sixth-grader at Santa Maria, recently placed second at the Westside Impact Regional Science and Engineering Fair in the fifth through sixth-grade science inquiry category.

The fair, which was on Feb. 21, 2026, and hosted by Desert Oasis School, featured some of the most talented young scientists from the west side of Phoenix. Alexa was recognized for her project, “Does Different Soil Composition Affect Heat Absorption?”, which impressed judges with its creativity, diligence to detail, and scientific rigor.

Alexa spent hours researching, designing, and conducting her project, which focused on elements of chemistry and physics. Her hard work paid off, as she was selected as a winner among a group of talented competitors.

“I am so excited and proud to see Alexa recognized for her hard work and dedication to scientific thought,” said Miss Irby, her science teacher. Way to go, Alexa!
